It all began when she figured out the intro to My Girl went straight across the black keys at 6 years old. She grew up in the 70's spending most of her life in Philly. The music of the 70's formed her ears, from R&B, Rock, Jazz, Classical, and Fusion. She's always played mainly by ear learning from listening her older siblings record collections which spanned the genres of music and the radio. She sang jazz standards in clubs and casino lounges in Philly and Atlantic City. Her dark contralto to silky soprano runs the gamut of Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Sade, to Toni Braxton, and Anita Baker. Her music is born out of the classic writing styles of Carole King and Paul Simon, while it pushes forward into the now of Solange and Janelle Monae. "This record is from a grown-ass woman's perspective, not a girl's with all the complexities and entanglements that brings. I wanted this album to have those 70's influences I love and also a fresh new energy to the writing and arrangements."
