Anything (Driving Me Insane)
All, I wrote this bass groove one afternoon and brought it to the guys in my then funk/jam band “Head.” We had been performing live regularly for 4-5 years at that point, both covers and original material. I remember putting in many hours to craft this into a presentable song, in fact, sometimes it was multiple dedicated practice sessions, just to fine tune one of our tracks. Ultimately, we recorded a full-length album of originals. We really wanted to capture our live performance feel and sound so we opted to record it that way. The studio was in a residential home. The owner, also a musician we knew, set up the home into a makeshift recording studio. Myself, the guitarist, and the keyboard player were together in one room, and ran “direct in” to the ADAT console, with no live speaker cabinets. The drummer was in another room in the house and the singer/flutist was in an upstairs bedroom. We all monitored with headphones. It was wild not being able to see each other and record live. We had rehearsed heavily for weeks prior and were tight with every track, nailing most of them on the first take. We recorded 12 songs in about 2 days and only punched in a couple of guitar bits and some backup vocals after everything was recorded. Hence the album title “Practically Live.” It took a lot of dedication and time and I am proud of our accomplishment, warts and all. Very satisfying as am sure you all understand. “Anything” is my personal favorite track on the album. Thanks for checking it out and feel free to leave any feedback you care to share. more
