It’s only natural that a hidden gem emerges amongst the hundreds of legendary musicians from Virginia and continues to prove why it may just be the birthplace of great R&B music. Kaye Jae’s strong yet sweet voice was cultivated singing soulful hymns in the humble choir stand of her grandmother’s small Baptist church. Growing up in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia in a small town called Phoebus, minutes away from the home of the great Ella Fitzgerald and across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel from the incomparable Missy Elliot, music seemed to surround Kaye Jae no matter where she went. Even from an early age she recognized the influence her voice had over an audience and she became enamored with the emotional connection she felt to it. She could usually be found “somewhere singing” and continued to hone her craft in church and all throughout her school years, even starting a gospel group that toured locally for a few years.
