“The Bad Guy in Your Story” — Marilee Anne Some parenting decisions won’t make you popular. Some people won’t understand them. And sometimes, your kids might even think you’re being unfair. One of those decisions for me? No sleepovers. It’s not about assuming every family is unsafe or believing something bad will happen everywhere my kids go. It’s about knowing I can’t control every person, every situation, or everything that happens in a home when I’m not there. I would rather have my kids be upset with me for setting a boundary than ignore my instincts just to make other people happy. I’m okay being the bad guy in their story if it means doing everything I reasonably can to protect them. They might not understand every decision I make right now, and that’s okay. My job isn’t to win a popularity contest. My job is to love them, guide them, and make choices with their safety in mind. Please listen with care. ❤️‍🩹 I’ve always been someone who feels things deeply, but I’ve never been the best at putting those feelings into words when speaking. Some people write in journals. Some people paint. Some people talk things out. Me? I’ve started turning my thoughts, feelings, memories, and experiences into music. And what started as just another creative outlet has slowly become something so much more. It’s like writing in a journal, except instead of closing the notebook and putting it away, I’m turning those pages into songs. And somehow, hearing those feelings outside of my own head has been incredibly healing. “The Kitchen Floor” is one of those songs that comes from a vulnerable place. Not every song I create is going to be happy. Some will be uncomfortable. Some will be heartbreaking. Some will tell stories that are difficult to put into words. But that’s the beauty of music. It gives us a way to express the things we sometimes don’t know how to say out loud. I’m not sharing my music because I have everything figured out or because every wound has healed.
