“The Bad Guy in Your Story” — Marilee Anne Some parenting decisions won’t make you popular. Some people won’t understand them. And sometimes, your kids might even think you’re being unfair. One of those decisions for me? No sleepovers. It’s not about assuming every family is unsafe or believing something bad will happen everywhere my kids go. It’s about knowing I can’t control every person, every situation, or everything that happens in a home when I’m not there. I would rather have my kids be upset with me for setting a boundary than ignore my instincts just to make other people happy. I’m okay being the bad guy in their story if it means doing everything I reasonably can to protect them. They might not understand every decision I make right now, and that’s okay. My job isn’t to win a popularity contest. My job is to love them, guide them, and make choices with their safety in mind.
