I found an old story in my family.
My great-great-great-grandfather, Captain Daniel Reign, left behind diaries from the Civil War. They weren't written like history books. They were written by a man who was there — a soldier, a father, a husband, and a man who carried more than he ever talked about.
I took those old pages and turned them into sixteen songs.
From the day he walked away from West Point with the Iowa Boys, through Missouri, Shiloh, Chancellorsville, Lee's surrender, and the long road back to Iowa.
And then the war ends.
But his story doesn't.
There is a bitter pension.
A governor waiting in Iowa.
A young woman named Sara.
Five children.
A Winchester in 1873.
And finally, one cold evening when the Reaper comes to collect an old friend.
These songs are my way of telling his story.
