You Had Me At Hello first began percolating around 5 years ago when I came up with a simple guitar riff using a two-note harmonic motif that now ties the whole song together from a musical and conceptual standpoint. 🤎 But the song started to take on a whole new life during lockdown in 2020, where the sudden and total lack of human contact became an issue for me personally, igniting an insidious brand of anxiety inside me that I never knew existed before. 🤎 As a result, this two-note motif took on a new meaning: a doorbell, a message alert tone, even the way the word “hello” is spoken phonetically — things that symbolize the initiation of human contact — or, as is depicted in my cover art for the song, two purple-rumped sunbirds simply acknowledging each other’s existence, a metaphor that, for me, says, “I am seen”. 🤎 This song is a celebration of togetherness, but it’s also an acknowledgment of the duality of the human experience, lightness and darkness, and the abrupt nature of love and life, as well as an appreciation of how fast the tides can change — a concept that is blatantly mirrored in the way the song violently coinflips in its final third. 🤎 It took a long time for me to get this song to a point where I was happy to let it fly the nest. I still don’t feel it’s totally perfect, but I’ve also reached a point where I doubt it ever will be, and now, thanks to the skilled mixing and mastering work by Sweet Track Audio, I’m happy with it and ready to move onto the next project. 🤎 If you enjoy it, please consider giving it a fav/share or add it to your library/playlists.
