Little piece of plastic hanging by your name
A photograph, a number, and a company chain
You hold it to the reader like a hand against a flame
One green light, and suddenly you’re not the same
The hallway knows your clearance
The elevator knows your floor
Everybody sees you entering
But no one knows what for
You stand a little taller
When the lock gives in
Like access means you earned it
Like the room proves who you’ve been
Swipe your keycard
Hear the doorway sing
Feel that little green light
Turn you into something
Every room that lets you through
Adds another mask to wear
Is your keycard really you
Or the person you become in there?
Some doors open softly, some are guarded like a throne
Some make you feel important just because you’re not alone
You start mistaking privilege for something that you own
Till the badge around your neck feels more like flesh and bone
You learn the names of people
Who can never reach your floor
You smile like you remember
What it felt like at the door
You speak a little louder
When your title’s in the room
But power borrowed from a building
Disappears when you leave too
Swipe your keycard
Hear the doorway sing
Feel that little green light
Turn you into something
Every room that lets you through
Adds another mask to wear
Is your keycard really you
Or the person you become in there?
When the system goes down
When the batteries die
When the screen says DENIED 🚨
Who are you on the other side?
When they take back the badge
And erase your name
Do you still feel chosen
When no door knows you came?
Swipe your keycard
Watch the doorway choose
But every lock that lets you in
Gives you something else to lose
You can own the highest clearance
You can breathe the private air
But is your keycard really you
Or the person you pretend in there?
A photograph, a number
A title by your heart
The door may know your access
But it doesn’t know who you are.more
