Back to the story... This song came from me wanting to praise an incredible mother unlike anyone I had ever seen. I don’t like to exaggerate, and this song is not an exaggeration either. What stood out to me most was that her “mom” side was already there long before she ever had children. I got to be with her for six years before we decided to have babies of our own. She always knew that she wanted a family, but she also made one thing very clear: she would only have children if she found the right person to have them with and raise them with. Having a family was one of the most important things she wanted in life, but what impressed me was that she would rather never have children at all than have them with someone who would not be the kind of father her babies deserved. We had a plan. Finish school. Get married. Get our careers going. Plan some time off. Have our first baby, a boy. Wait five years. Then have our last baby, a girl. But life had other plans. One day, we received a frightening diagnosis from a doctor who told us that she might not be able to have children at all, and that if we had a chance, it might have to be then or never. It devastated both of us. For me, one of the hardest parts was thinking about what that would do to her emotionally. I already knew how badly she wanted to be a mother, and I already knew what an amazing mother I believed she would become. The thought of her losing that dream scared me. I worried that something so painful could change the joyful, loving personality I had fallen in love with. So that day, we decided to take a slight detour from the plan. This is how it actually happened: We continued school. We made the baby. :) She got pregnant. Her delivery date was scheduled for the day after her final exam. I finished my master’s degree. We had our son. We spent the summer with the baby. After that, she switched her school schedule from daytime classes to evenings. I worked during the day while she stayed with the baby. She did her homework during the day and went to school in the evenings. Then I took over with the baby at night while she was in class. One year later, we got married. We finished school. Five years after our son was born, we had our daughter. She then made another decision that showed me exactly what kind of mother she was. She chose not to work for the next ten years so that each of our children could have her full, undivided attention during the first five years of their lives, until they started school. The way she always showed up. And all the little things that proved to me that I had been right about her long before we ever had kids.
