You're Not Special
Oliver Cañete, an independent artist with roots in street performance, is set to unleash his latest single, "You're Not Special." This song was born from some of Oliver's life experiences, after parting ways with short-lived romantic stories and encounters with some really entitled people who deemed themselves as “special”. Likewise, after catching some of his favorite philosopher’s thoughts as also a video of Simon Sinek, more specifically one aimed at Millennials and Gen Z in which he uses the words “You’re Not Special”, Oliver started looking even more critically into how today's generation is hooked on the quick highs of social media approval, trying to tie joy to passing feelings, and building up shallow connections. This song jumps right into the whole scene of crafting online images, and putting on masks to hide people’s most profound frustrations. Oliver's singing takes inspiration from a wide range of artists, from the big rock anthems of Bon Jovi and Bruce Dickinson to the heartfelt tunes of James Bay and John Mayer and the vibes of Robbie Williams. The synths and effects groove to the beats of "Techno Fan" by The Wombats and the catchy rhythms of "Tell Me Why" by Supermode, with a tip of the hat to Daft Punk's recent hits and early 2000s jams like "One More Time." The basslines bring in that cool vibe from "Two Princes" by Spin Doctors and the rebellious edge of "Been Caught Stealing" by Jane's Addiction. On the acoustic guitar side, you'll catch vibes from the easy tunes of "That Green Gentleman" by Panic! At The Disco, the acoustic version of "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" by Mike Posner, as also James Bay's ballad "If You Ever Want to Be in Love" and James Blunt's introspective track "Same Mistake." The beat, driven by the drums, takes inspiration from anthems like "We Are Young" by Fun. and the high-octane energy of "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals. Then, on the electric guitar front, you'll find a mix of folk-rock, new metal, and post-grunge vibes. Think along the lines of "Ditmas" by Mumford & Sons, the intense feel of "Living Dead Girl" by Rob Zombie, and the heartfelt resonance of "Home" by Three Days Grace. With "You're Not Special," Oliver Cañete invites listeners on a musical journey, weaving together a tapestry of influences and experiences, while delving into the complexities of modern life, and the constant urge to feel special. more
