About three years ago, I found that I enjoyed one particularly fun and plucky tune, but just couldn't seem to write the correct lyrics to it. To work around this, I endeavored to find what the tune of said lyrics might be FIRST, and THEN write the lyrics to properly express the tune (which I have successfully done on occasion previously). In order to make this work in such a fashion so as to actually be a fun process, I just started singing the alphabet.
In the process, I learned about how genuinely confusing the standard version of the ABC's can be for many children to learn, mainly due to the fact that 'L M N O P' is pronounced quickly and sloppily, ending up with a solid word sounding like 'ella-menopee'. Additionally, the fact that the word 'AND' is wedged between 'Y' & 'Z' misleads many kids into thinking that 'AND' is a part of the alphabet, which is not so difficult to correct in the short term, but more importantly, many learners make the same assumption as is commonly perceived with 'LMNOP', and actually believe there is (either):
1. An 'N' between 'Y' & 'Z'.
2. An 'N' which may have been confused by the 'ella-menopee' problem actually exists at the end of the alphabet. OR
3. A brand new phonetic sequence which is realized as
'why-anzee'.
Each of these problems can go unnoticed by children who tend to be quieter in nature, have linguistically-divergent minds, or may even simply not yet have the tools of inquiry which can lead them to the best method of understanding the alphabet.
To top it all off, the Alphabet we use simply takes the tune of 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star', which is beautiful, but... Insufficient when considering the relatively common problems above.
I propose a new Alphabet song. An ABC song which is catchy, energetic, fun, and clear. more
