Thammarat’s music carries his promise to always be loud in a beautiful way. Born in an orphanage in Thailand, adopted, and raised in Maryland by a family of international human rights attorneys, he grew up between stories of resilience, justice, oppression, and belonging. After going through some dark times in high school, he began writing original songs to make peace with his identities and reconnect with a world he no longer trusted. What began as therapeutic journaling and piano sing-alongs with his late grandfather became an ongoing journey of healing, self-discovery, and change. Today, he takes the stage as an openly gay, gender-expansive, Thai American artist, performing original “gaysian theater pop” anthems on the same digital keyboard his grandfather loved so dearly.

I wrote “Normal” as an anthem and a love letter to the queer community who dare to be themselves in a world that demands conformity. The lyrics depict my journey growing up gay and gender expansive, capturing the moments of joy, beauty, and defiance that come with existing outside heteronormative expectations. The story grew out of a poem I wrote in ninth grade about not feeling normal. This song reclaims my childhood insecurity, transforming my doubts into a message of radical love and acceptance. Even if you do not identify as queer, Normal’s message is for you. more
