Inspired by the Vala of the same name from Tolkien's universe. Nienna's element is grief and those who listen to her teachings learn wisdom, endurance and pity. Her ever mourning has nothing to do with weakness. Gandalf pity and compassion can be traced back to her teachings and it is a figure of great importance as she represents healing through sadness which is a concept often misunderstood in real life: resiliency through understanding and endurance of grief.
