ONE DAY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lost 1960s Master "One Day" by Marie Curie Resurfaces After 60 Years Recording found under a bookcase of old records, produced by Stephen Schlaks and Howard Farber, now streaming worldwide via DistroKid NEW YORK, NY — September 22, 2026 — A long-lost master recording, "One Day" by Marie Curie, is now streaming worldwide via DistroKid following its release on September 22, 2026. Produced by veteran music-industry figures Stephen Schlaks and Howard Farber. Schlaks discovered the master earlier this year, tucked under a bookcase stacked with old records dating from the late 1950s and 1960s. "I can hardly remember the actual recording session," said Schlaks of the 1962 session. "I remember that I played piano, Farber played drums, and Phil Spector was on guitar." "Marie Curie" was not the singer's real name. In the early 1960s, Schlaks and Farber gave the moniker — a nod to the Nobel Prize–winning scientist famed for discovering radium — to a background vocalist who cut demo recordings with the pair during that era. The track's unusual background vocal sound was shaped by Jerry Samuels, who only a few years later became the singer, ( NAPOLEON 14th ) writer, producer, and engineer behind his own 1966 hit "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!," pushing Schlaks and Farber toward something unlike anything else being recorded at the time. The master was restored with the help of Farber's grandson, a sound engineer and producer who preserved the original recording's character for a modern streaming audience. The Team Behind the Record The producers behind "One Day" bring an unusually deep catalog to the release. As partners, Schlaks and Farber produced a 1962 Top 40 hit for Kenny Dino, "Your Ma Said You Cried in Your Sleep Last Night." Farber was also the sole musician behind the 1966 multi-million-selling novelty smash "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" by Napoleon XIV, playing the hypnotic drum-and-tambourine pattern that drove the record to the top of the charts. That same drum loop found a second life nearly 60 years later when Kanye West and Kid Cudi sampled it for "FIRE," a track on their 2018 album KIDS SEE GHOSTS. Stephen Schlaks brings his own storied career to the partnership, having been a pioneering figure in Italy's "New Romantic" instrumental music movement of the 1970s and '80s, with gold-certified hits including "Blue Dolphin" and "Sensitive and Delicate." Together, Schlaks and Farber's catalog reflects a rare through-line in popular music — production work that has resurfaced and found new audiences across multiple generations. Quote "When Stephen played it for me, all the memories came rushing back," said Farber. "We used Jerry Samuels from Associated Recording Studios. Jerry was the original producer and engineer on 'They're Coming to Take Me Away.' Jerry wanted to help us get a sound unlike anything we'd heard before for the backgrounds. It was the craziest and weirdest background sound we'd ever heard." Listen Now "One Day" by Marie Curie is available now on all major streaming platforms via DistroKid.
